Frozen and Forgotten
At Joan of Arc Academy, we care deeply about supporting girls in our city. More than 1,000 young people in Ottawa will experience homelessness this year — many without safe and stable shelter. Homeless youth have never had a greater need for safe places to live.
We have created an art installation on our school grounds to raise awareness of those who are frozen and forgotten on our streets. We aim to raise $25,000 to fund a room at the Youth Services Bureau’s Youth Hub—a new residential building that will provide dental care, mental-health support and other vital services.
Donations of $10 or more will support our goal to become a Founding Family at the Youth Housing Hub. In turn, the frozen and forgotten youths in Ottawa will have a safe, warm and supportive home.
Help us end youth homelessness in our city.
Girls 4 Girls
Five years ago, our grade 8 students created Girls 4 Girls, a club dedicated to supporting the homeless girls at the Youth Services Bureau (YSB) Young Women’s Emergency Shelter. The Girls 4 Girls club has donated Christmas stockings, Easter and Valentine’s treats and birthday gifts. In 2018, instead of having costly graduation celebrations, our students gave their money to YSB to sponsor a homeless girl for a year.
At the Academy, we encourage our students to become strong and compassionate leaders and make positive contributions to their community. Frozen and forgotten is the latest example of their commitment.
You can also help us achieve our goal by freezing a pair of jeans in your front yard, or outside your place of work. To do so, watch the video below or follow these simple steps:
- Ensure the temperature is below zero!
- Take the jeans you want to freeze outside.
- Put a long piece of wood through one leg of the jeans to secure them to the ground.
- Fill both legs of the jeans with snow.
- Use a spray bottle to spritz the jeans with water and shape them.
- Admire your work!
